Key takeaways
- Upload the theme from Online Store → Themes → Add theme → Upload zip file.
- The ZIP must have the theme folders (layout, sections, templates…) at its top level.
- Customize and preview the new theme before you publish — your live store stays untouched until then.
You've bought a Shopify theme and downloaded a ZIP file. Good news: installing it takes about five minutes and doesn't touch your live store until you decide it should. Here's the exact process.
Before you start
- Don't unzip the file. Shopify needs the ZIP exactly as you downloaded it.
- Back up your current theme. In your theme library, open the menu next to your live theme and choose Duplicate. It's free insurance.
- Use a desktop browser. Uploading and customizing is much easier on a big screen.
Step-by-step: upload the theme
- Open your theme libraryIn your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
- Add a new themeScroll to the Theme library section and click Add theme, then choose Upload zip file.
- Select the ZIPPick the theme file from your computer and click Upload file. The upload usually takes under a minute.
- Customize itWhen the theme appears in your library, click Customize. Add your logo, colors, menus and homepage sections.
- Preview on mobileIn the editor, switch to the mobile view, then use Preview to click through your store as a customer would.
- PublishWhen you're happy, go back to the theme library, open the theme's menu and click Publish.
Tip: Your old theme stays in the library after you publish the new one. If anything looks wrong, you can switch back in one click.
Fixing common upload errors
"Missing template layout/theme.liquid"
This almost always means the ZIP contains an extra folder. Shopify expects to see folders like layout, sections and templates as soon as it opens the ZIP. If you see a single folder with the theme's name instead, open it, select everything inside, and compress those files into a new ZIP.
"The file is too large"
Shopify limits theme uploads to 50 MB. A theme over that size usually includes demo images or videos. Check whether the developer offers a "lite" download, or contact their support.
The upload succeeds but the store looks empty
That's normal. A new theme doesn't know which collections, menus or images to show yet. Open the theme editor and point each section at your own content — for example, choose a collection for the "Featured products" section.
Heads up: Apps that you installed by pasting code into your old theme won't automatically move to the new one. Online Store 2.0 apps usually appear as app blocks you can add in the editor; older apps may need to be reconnected.
After you publish: a 10-minute checklist
- Place a test order (or use a discount code for a 100% test) to make sure checkout works.
- Check your main menu and footer links.
- Open three random product pages on your phone.
- Make sure your newsletter form and contact form send correctly.
- Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights to get a baseline score.
Updating the theme later
When the developer releases a new version, you'll repeat the same upload process with the new ZIP. Your settings don't carry over automatically, so before updating, take screenshots of your theme editor settings — or ask the developer whether they provide an update guide.
